When ‘less is more’: The rationale for an adaptive toolbox to manage the risk and uncertainty of rework

Determining the risk and uncertainty of rework in construction has received limited attention due to a paucity information about its frequency causes. Errors made during construction, which may require rework, can go undetected, manifesting as an engineering failure asset’s operation thus jeopardise system safety. Therefore, this paper addresses following research question: How practitioners make better decisions mitigate infrastructure assets ensure safety? Using mega-transport asset case setting, we adopt interpretative line inquiry examine people's experiences with managing under auspices sense-making lens. Our analysis revealed that heuristics were being used informally determine risks uncertainties absence information, resulting them becoming curiosities same mistakes repeated learning stymied. We suggest developing adaptive-box tool comprising provide much-need theoretical foundation effectively manage rework. Such would be adaptable different situations they are fitted environment through evolution and/or by amending successively small steps.
